Project Brief

Overview

Founded in 2007, ChicaGirl Magazine is a pioneering publication dedicated to uplifting and empowering young girls by spotlighting motivational and inspirational figures. Unlike traditional tabloid magazines, ChicaGirl focuses on real-life issues that resonate with its audience, promoting authenticity, resilience, and self-confidence.

Distribution Expansion

Originally available in San Antonio-based H-E-B supermarkets and other H-E-B locations across Texas, ChicaGirl Magazine expanded its retail presence in Summer 2015. The magazine became available in major pharmacy and drugstore chains, including CVS and Walgreens, throughout the San Antonio area—broadening its reach and accessibility to its core readership.

Define the Problem

Over the past decade, ChicaGirlMagazine.com has undergone several redesigns in an effort to stay relevant with evolving digital content trends. However, balancing the fast-paced nature of social media with the timeless appeal of a print magazine has remained a challenge.

Problem Statement

How might we create an engaging online experience that mirrors the interactivity of social media platforms while preserving the nostalgic charm of reading a print magazine?

Project Goal

ChicaGirl aims to inspire a new generation of readers while honoring the magazine’s print legacy. The primary goal for the digital experience is to provide:

  • Intuitive navigation

  • User-friendly account features

  • A dynamic News Feed section

  • Mobile photo uploads (with future app integration for website uploads)

These updates will ensure a modern, interactive platform that reflects the brand’s core mission of empowerment and connection.

Methodologies and Research
  • Customer Journey Map, Service Blueprint, User Personas, and User Interviews.

  • Competitive Analysis, Usability Testing, and analysis.

  • Focus groups helped us understand what was needed and most popular for our target audience.

  • Synthesized the results of the user interviews and shared the results with the Editor.

Design
  • Wireframes and high-fidelity prototype.

  • Information Architecture.

  • Developed a style guide and specifications agenda for our development team.

Facebook Stats
Facebook has been a tool for keeping track of visitors for ChicaGirl while the site is under development.
